Goals

12

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

SDG Goal 12, "Responsible Consumption and Production," aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. This goal emphasizes the importance of reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse. It advocates for efficient use of natural resources, encouraging businesses and individuals to adopt sustainable practices. By focusing on sustainable management and efficient use of resources, Goal 12 seeks to mitigate the environmental impact of consumption and production, promoting a circular economy. Ultimately, this goal aims to achieve economic growth and development while reducing the ecological footprint, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world.

Statistics of Pakistan

Waste Generation

Pakistan generates approximately 48.5 million tons of solid waste annually, with the figure expected to increase by about 2.4% each year. Urban areas produce more waste compared to rural areas due to higher population density and consumption patterns.

Recycling Rate

The recycling rate in Pakistan is quite low, with less than 10% of municipal solid waste being recycled. Most recycling activities are informal and not regulated by the government, leading to inefficiencies and health risks for those involved.

Industrial Waste

The industrial sector in Pakistan contributes significantly to waste generation. Textile and leather industries, in particular, are major waste producers. It is estimated that around 20% of industrial waste in Pakistan is hazardous and requires proper management to avoid environmental damage.

Natural Resource Use

Pakistan’s per capita material footprint is around 2.8 tons, which is lower compared to the global average of about 8 tons per capita. However, the efficient use of natural resources remains a challenge, particularly in sectors like agriculture and industry.

Energy Consumption

The country has a high energy consumption rate, with a significant reliance on non-renewable sources. Approximately 64% of Pakistan's energy mix comes from fossil fuels, leading to high greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation.

Sustainable Business Practices

Awareness and implementation of sustainable business practices are growing but remain limited. Only about 20% of large businesses in Pakistan have adopted formal sustainability practices or reporting. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are even less likely to engage in sustainable practices due to resource constraints and lack of awareness.
